Anxiety is something we all experience from time to time. It's our body's natural response to stress or perceived danger. But when anxiety begins to affect everyday life, it can leave you feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and stuck.
Recognising the signs is often the first step towards getting support.
1. You overthink everything
You find yourself replaying conversations, worrying about future situations or imagining the worst-case scenario, even when there's little evidence that something will go wrong.
2. You struggle to switch off
Your mind feels constantly busy. Even when you're relaxing, it can feel difficult to quiet your thoughts.
3. Your body feels tense
Anxiety doesn't just affect the mind. You may notice tight shoulders, headaches, jaw clenching or a racing heartbeat.
4. Sleep feels difficult
You might struggle to fall asleep because your mind is racing, or wake during the night feeling worried.
5. You avoid situations
Sometimes anxiety leads us to avoid social events, phone calls, driving, work meetings or other situations that feel overwhelming.
6. You constantly seek reassurance
Repeatedly asking others if everything is okay can become anxiety's way of trying to feel safe.
7. You feel irritable
Living with ongoing anxiety is tiring, and it's common to notice yourself becoming more emotionally reactive.
8. You can't enjoy the present
Your mind is so focused on what might happen next that it's difficult to fully experience today.
9. Small tasks feel overwhelming
Replying to emails, making appointments or leaving the house can suddenly feel much harder than they used to.
10. You're exhausted
Constant worry uses an incredible amount of emotional energy. Feeling mentally drained is one of the most common experiences people describe.
When should you seek support?
If anxiety is affecting your relationships, work, sleep or overall quality of life, talking therapy can help you understand what's happening beneath the surface and develop healthier ways of coping.
You don't have to wait until things feel unbearable before asking for help.
